At Phantom Ranch we teach ‘Rider Independence’. This means the student is taught all aspects of horse care, ground work and riding. Students are taught how to catch and groom their horse before the lesson, and how to untack and release their horse after the lesson. Students are challenged to experience different saddle disciplines as well as other styles - driving with our minis, vaulting on our draft horses and navigating our trail obstacle courses in-hand and mounted.

We offer trail rides, week long summer horse camps; Girl Scouts and other group education, horsemanship lessons and volunteer opportunities. We are a ETS host for clinics and competitions. We are currently looking for summer staff who would like to work in a Christian environment and have a passion for training kids with horses.

We believe the more experience a student has with horses on all levels, the better they will understand and communicate with any horse they work with. We offer saddle seat (English) and some western riding lessons to all levels of riders, from the first lesson to the most advanced rider. You do not have to own your own horse as we have riding programs for the serious show ring competitor as well as for newcomers - even Tiny Tots! In all facets of the learning process, we encourage a strong sense of camaraderie, sportsmanship and fun. We offer adult-only riding groups on Monday evenings. Our heated indoor arena allows us to maintain our lesson schedule year-round.

We would love for you to come and visit us for a tour and watch us give a riding lesson so you can learn first-hand about our program and teaching style. We give lessons Monday through Thursday and on weekends. Please call ahead if you would like to come for a visit.

We also offer camps, birthday parties, Girl Scout and Boy Scout visits to earn badges, boarding and training services. Clients are also welcome to join our Youth Club which meets once a month and participates in horse activities, community service, fun outings, and more!

HISTORY AND GOALS

Kathy’s equine knowledge is derived from a diverse background cultivated from working with an array of individuals.

Kathy started her riding career at the age of 7 on a Shetland pony and moved up to horses with her moms Quarter Horse. Her foundation started with 4-H and she was taught the many values, ethics, and guidelines that she carries with her today. She has successfully competed in 4-H, USEF Hunter/Jumper, AQHA, AHA, Pinto, USDF Dressage, and AWS.

Whether you’re younger, older, starting, intermediate, working, retired, or just "getting back into it," these lessons are perfect for you! Angela offers lessons on great horses that have great experience in every situation. Concentrating on the communication with horses, taking pleasure in riding, standard safety around equines, practiced ground manners, and overall riding skills, this lesson program is perfect for any rider! Lessons are designed to fit the individual, with more concentrated riding instructions for teens and adults, while still staying fun for young ones that can easily lose focus. Angela graduated from University of Wisconsin River Falls with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science Equine Management. She has been riding for many years, learning from a variety of instructors, which has culminated into her unique and rewarding teaching style. She is eager to learn as much as she can and looks forward to “working with horses and humans.” She began with barrel racing her Appaloosa mare, and then progressed into natural horsemanship. Schooling followed where she gained knowledge in reining allowing her to participate in the colleges “Colts in Training” program for three semesters. Upon graduation she traveled to audit many different colt starting programs including Lee Smith, an unparalleled horsewoman who was a predecessor to one of the founders of horsemanship, Ray Hunt.
Angela is now participating in Dressage and Jumping lessons to allow a better understanding of the English disciplines. Not only does AES offer beginning riding lessons but Angela also “starts” colts and offers Equine Sports Massage Therapy for any horse with muscular tension.

Kenneth Dierks has a long and successful career in Eventing at the upper levels and showing in Dressage and Jumpers. He teaches Beginner thru Advanced levels. His style is patient and positive and focuses on instilling confidence in the horse and rider.

He has ridden in the NAYRC at the Intermediate** Level for 4 years and was a member of the gold-medal winning team in 1994. He is a Communications Graduate from Augustana College and a U.S. Pony Club Graduate A. Ken shows and trains numerous horses and specializes in young and problem horses.
