I have been teaching riding lessons since I was 16 years old and have taken a year’s hiatus from teaching to focus on my career. I am now ready to start teaching again. I am looking to teach people on their own mounts, though would consider a limited number of clients to ride my (wonderful) mare.
I am fully educated to instruct riding lessons, as I graduated with a degree in Recreation and Leisure with a concentration in Equine Studies from Houghton College. The focus of my equine studies was not only in horsemanship and barn management, but in teaching. My studies included becoming a level 4 CHA Certified Riding Instructor (the highest attainable level for one discipline), clinics with Olympic coaches and a course on educational psychology. The greatest value I received from my education was not becoming a better rider, but that I became a teacher.
I have the ability to instruct riders of all levels and all ages. I also have experience working with those who need some confidence building. My focus is always on partnership with the horse and how our bodies relate to the horses. I develop programs and exercises based on each riders needs in order to achieve success. My goal is for each lesson to build upon the last, for my student to take something away from each lesson, and to make it all FUN!
I have been riding since the age of 3, and began serious instruction at the age of 8. My base of knowledge all stems from classical dressage and branches into hunters, jumpers, eventing, and some western. I have ridden not only with Olympic coach Walter Zettl, but also with Olympic rider Chris Kappler. When I moved to Virginia I was a working student for an Advanced level eventer. This experience allowed me to have coaching from her, as well as be present when she was having lessons from greats such as Jimmy Wofford.
My extensive riding background and my education in teaching and how people learn equips me with the tools to be an excellent instructor. My outgoing, energetic personality draws students into learning and puts them at ease.

Kim Yotko is an A.R.I.A. certified instructor in both Hunt Seat and Dressage. She has been teaching since 1976 on our own quality horses and ponies. Kim has quite a comprehensive background in riding. As a junior she rode at the esteemed Jane Dillon's Junior Equitation School, as well as being a member of the United States Pony Club. Our lessons for beginners include ground time, grooming and tacking instruction. Once young riders are proficient in this process, then lesson time will begin when mounted. All riders need to wear proper riding boots and a safety approved helmet. New riders must have a copy of a current medical insurance card and a signed release waiver on file. Lessons may include mounted exercises as well as theory lessons (unmounted). We ride both in and out of the ring for a well-balanced riding education.
