Couderay Springs Farm offers horseback riding lessons for all ages and all levels of riders. We specialize in well rounded English lessons that are safe, fun, and educational. Our goal is to teach the rider to become a partner with their horse and fully understand him at all levels. We provide individual and small group (2-3 people) lessons and have an excellent crew of lesson horses of varying abilities. Additionally, we provide partial and full leases to people in our lesson program and also gladly accept ship ins. Our facility has over 50 acres 20 min south of Charlottesville, which include a sand ring with hunter/jumper jumps, a center aisle barn with tack room and bathroom, and trails that wind around the property.

Over 25 years of experience support our philosophies and we truly believe that one is always learning. The main instructor has studied with top riders both locally and abroad, in many different disciplines including hunters, jumpers, eventing, dressage, driving, and western. She has studied at UVA and has a Masters in Teaching and is a certified Special Ed Instructor of Emotionally Disturbed and Learning Disabled children. Charlotte Williams is an experienced hunter/jumper/event rider currently specializing in jumpers and eventing. Her objective is to give both horses and riders a solid foundation that they can take to any equine discipline of their choosing or to just enjoy the horses to the best of their abilities. There is a huge focus in both riding and horsemanship on the ground. Working and riding the horses is not just about the saddle time but also the time on the ground to give a solid foundation in all aspects for the horse and the rider. She has brought several horses up from the ground to being successful show horses. I have been teaching riding lessons since I was 16 years old and have taken a year’s hiatus from teaching to focus on my career. I am now ready to start teaching again. I am looking to teach people on their own mounts, though would consider a limited number of clients to ride my (wonderful) mare.
I am fully educated to instruct riding lessons, as I graduated with a degree in Recreation and Leisure with a concentration in Equine Studies from Houghton College. The focus of my equine studies was not only in horsemanship and barn management, but in teaching. My studies included becoming a level 4 CHA Certified Riding Instructor (the highest attainable level for one discipline), clinics with Olympic coaches and a course on educational psychology. The greatest value I received from my education was not becoming a better rider, but that I became a teacher.
I have the ability to instruct riders of all levels and all ages. I also have experience working with those who need some confidence building. My focus is always on partnership with the horse and how our bodies relate to the horses. I develop programs and exercises based on each riders needs in order to achieve success. My goal is for each lesson to build upon the last, for my student to take something away from each lesson, and to make it all FUN!
I have been riding since the age of 3, and began serious instruction at the age of 8. My base of knowledge all stems from classical dressage and branches into hunters, jumpers, eventing, and some western. I have ridden not only with Olympic coach Walter Zettl, but also with Olympic rider Chris Kappler. When I moved to Virginia I was a working student for an Advanced level eventer. This experience allowed me to have coaching from her, as well as be present when she was having lessons from greats such as Jimmy Wofford.
My extensive riding background and my education in teaching and how people learn equips me with the tools to be an excellent instructor. My outgoing, energetic personality draws students into learning and puts them at ease.

Kim Yotko is an A.R.I.A. certified instructor in both Hunt Seat and Dressage. She has been teaching since 1976 on our own quality horses and ponies. Kim has quite a comprehensive background in riding. As a junior she rode at the esteemed Jane Dillon's Junior Equitation School, as well as being a member of the United States Pony Club. More recently, Kim Has received further Dressage training in Germany, Portugal, and Spain under the tutelage of world class instructors and Olympians.
