We are a boarding,training, and hunter/jumper barn offering lessons, leases and horses for sale or consignment. This facility is one the most beautiful places to keep your horses, giving them the chance to be turnout in lush green fields and stay in airy, matted, double mucked, fluffy bedded stalls. Horses are fed up to three times a day. Turnout is flexible allowing your horse to go out in a group or in a private field. We have a brand new riding arena with blue stone footing that is dragged daily with new jumps. There is also a 14-acre field with cross country course soon to be created. Welcome to Merkel Farms, a family owned and operated equestrian center run by Stephanie Serenati-Merkel. Merkel Farm is nestled between Bowie State University and the Patuxent Wildlife Preserve in Bowie, MD and is within easy reach from the Washington D.C., Annapolis and Baltimore metro areas. We have miles of trails surrounding the property. We also have a lighted indoor and outdoor ring which allows for boarders and lesson students to ride year round. We have two barns and two separately fenced fields for turnout. The outdoor and indoor rings are dragged throughout the year to maintain optimal footing for horses. Merkel Farms also runs a summer camp and host a winter show series.

The 13 acres include 6 acres of mature pasture with 5 paddocks, 1 acre of residence, and the rest are forest, pound, private riding trail and valley. The property has a 1/4 mile private new paved driveway, and is backed by the upper stream of the Patuxent River. The farm is less than 1 mile away from Walmart Shopping Center, 3 miles away from Bowie Town Center, less than 20 minutes driving distance to Annapolis, about 30 minutes to Fort Meade, less than 40 minutes driving distance to Washington DC and about 45 minutes to Baltimore. You can also take New Carrollton Amtrak, or Green Belt metro station to Washington DC or many other places. To New Carrollton Amtrak metro stations is less 20 minutes driving, and about 35 minutes to the Green Belt one.

A modern 15 - 12 x 12 stall barn w/ 12' aisle, heated/AC tack room, attached indoor riding arena, large turnout areas, large outside ring, trails throughout property and approximately 1/2 mile off road.
Monthly board of $420 includes assigned stall in bad weather or for medical needs, otherwise turned out in ample pasture 24/7 in small groups of 2-4, separated for feeding, simple tasks such as fly mask, blankets, etc.. grain (sweet feed, Sentinel and/or Sunshine) and grass hay. Smithwick Farm is nearly 100 acres professional horse farm where four of our trained race horses were inducted into the TB Hall of Fame. We offer field board, self-care full field care (we grain horses), and limited full board. Field care is $100/ ponies and $125/ horses per month, and the self-care is $200 per month. Full field board is $300 per month, and the full board is $500 per month. There is a 5/8, grass breezing area and an advanced timber jumping course. There is TB retraining to stadium jumpers, hunters, and basic dressage, whereby we assist ametuer riders in this process. We our honored to have been invited to have a Pony Club Riding Center.
